Jennifer Akers, B.S., Magna Cum LaudeMs. Akers has been fortunate enough to call the Low Country her home for the last five years. Prior to that she had been a lifelong urban dweller of St. Louis, Missouri. She loves all of the natural wonders and hospitality found here. She has a diverse education in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri, St. Louis and Architecture from the Kansas State University with bachelor degrees in both fields. She brings six years of teaching experience ranging from ages Pre-K 3 to the 4th grade. Ms. Akers continued on her journey as a lifelong learner last year and earned her gifted and talented certification. This will be the third year that Ms. Akers gratefully returns as a member of the Riverview family. The students have been very receptive to Ms. Akers' inquiry based and exploratory approach to the Math and Science curriculum. Her favorite quote from the students is, “This is Science? Are you sure because this is fun!”

Mary Spence, M.Ed.A graduate of Clemson University, with a degree in elementary education, and of The Citadel, with a master’s degree in reading education, I have over seventeen years of teaching experience in South Carolina and Florida. Variety is the spice of life, and I have enjoyed teaching every elementary grade level from kindergarten to fifth grade. I received my gifted and talented teaching endorsement in 2010, and, most recently, I have been working as a gifted and talented coordinator and fourth grade teacher. In addition, I have acquired some of my most valuable experience teaching my own four children! I believe that learning is best facilitated in a well-organized, positive, nurturing community where students have a clear understanding of expectations, but where they also feel the freedom to explore. I embrace the Riverview Charter School philosophy of integrating cross-curricular learning, based on a common theme, in order that children are encouraged to make authentic connections to the world.
Spending time with my grown children is my favorite hobby. I am lucky that they all live in South Carolina, so I have easy access! I am an avid reader, and I read extensively for pleasure and for professional growth. Having lived in Beaufort for twenty-three years, I absolutely love the natural beauty of the low country, and I enjoy outdoor activities…biking, walking, going to the beach, gardening, or eating!
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of Riverview Charter School, and I look forward to a great year!
