Summer Reading 2012

Dear Riverview Families,

We want to encourage Riverview students to make reading for fun a part of their daily routine this summer.  Be a part of the Riverview Reading Challenge!

How to Sharpen Reading Skills and Prevent the Summer Slide

  1. PARTICIPATE IN THE RIVERVIEW READING CHALLENGE!

  2. THE POWER OF CHOICE: Help your child find a book that matches his/her interests. Building on a student’s interests can stimulate an interest in reading, even among reluctant and struggling readers. 91% of kids are more likely to finish books when they are allowed to choose them.

  3.   MAKE BOOKS ACCESSIBLE. Having books all around the house or while traveling in the car are great ways to encourage your kids to pick one up and read. Audio and eBooks are great options too! When kids read 4 or more books over the summer, they can avoid the “Summer Slide”-- the loss of core reading skills that occurs when kids don’t read books during summer break.

  4.   READ EVERY DAY: Children who read widely and frequently are higher achievers than

students who read rarely and narrowly. As kids spend more time reading for fun, their reading achievement increases.

How Can My Child Participate in the Riverview Reading Challenge?

  1. Kindergarten through 3rd Grade: Students are encouraged to read 5 books of choice and complete a Reading Record.  Turn in COMPLETE Reading Records the first week of school to your child’s homeroom teacher, with first and last names written clearly.

*Read-Alouds with family members count toward the challenge.

  1. 4th - 6th GRADE: Students are encouraged to read 5 books of choice but are required to read two books of choice and complete a Reading Record. Turn in COMPLETE Reading Records the first week of school to your child’s homeroom teacher, with first and last names written clearly.

  1. 7TH - 8TH GRADE: Please click here to read Ms. Daubert’s summer reading requirements.  In order to be included in the Riverview Reading Challenge Awards, please complete a Reading Record and turn in COMPLETE Reading Records the first week of school to your child’s homeroom teacher, with first and last names written clearly.

Riverview’s Recommended Summer Reading List

  1. Does your child need help choosing a good book? Click here to view the Riverview Summer Reading List.

  2. Students DO NOT have to choose books from Riverview’s 2012 Summer Reading List to participate in the Riverview Reading Challenge. Riverview’s Reading List is simply a list of recommendations in case families need assistance.

Riverview’s READING CHALLENGE AWARDS!

All students that turn in COMPLETED Reading Records the first week of school will be:

  1.   eligible to win $5 gift certificates to Riverview’s fall Scholastic Book Fair

  2. eligible to be win the GRAND PRIZE; a $50 gift certificate to Riverview’s fall Scholastic book fair.

How Can I Encourage Summer Reading at Home?

Reading, like any skill, requires practice, so we encourage you to promote summer reading in your home (and on vacation!):

  1. Go to the library together every week

  2. Share books that you loved as a kid with your own child

  3. Read aloud to your child—even if they’re growing up.  Every age group loves to be read to and it strengthens reading skills.

  4. Create a Family Book Club (or mother-daughter, father-son, etc.) where you read the same books and discuss them. This is a great strategy for middle school students reading books that have complex themes. Reading is like watching a movie—you want to talk about it!

  5. Encourage your child to choose the books they want to read.

In addition to participating in Riverview’s Reading Challenge, we encourage your family to join the Scholastic Summer Challenge, a free reading program dedicated to stopping the “Summer Slide” and inspiring kids to read more books this summer. Now in its sixth year, the Summer Challenge invites kids to log the minutes they spend reading as they READ FOR THE WORLD RECORD, and the 20 schools with the most minutes logged will receive recognition in the 2012 Scholastic Book of World Records.
