February and March are naturally conducive to weather study due to more varied changes in weather patterns. Learners began our Weather Study by exploring climate and weather maps. The unit is organized into three subtopics--What Makes the Weather; Clouds: The Key to Weather Forecasting; and Extreme Weather. Over the course of the unit each student will create a two-sided, four-pocket Weather Folder to showcase learning. It will include science experiment procedures and results, daily weather observations and graphs, and creative representations of clouds. Students enjoyed experimenting to learn how the water cycle works and all about the properties of wind. We learned that the sun is the engine that runs this system. We were fortunate to arrange a studio tour of the WSAV Television Station. Meteorologists Lee Haywood and Ariella Scalese were our guides as we sought to understand the parts of the weather system. As a review of our Community Systems unit, while in Savannah we also headed to the Civil Rights Museum to participate in an interactive tour designed to help us understand that life was not always fair and equal for people in our state. Students shared individual family stories with each other as we continue to build an understanding between students and also an appreciation that our diversity brings strength.
Equal Groups, Arrays, and Tessellations
Our work in mathematics has focused on a study of arrays. Students love creating and analyzing these visual representations of equal groups in order to build foundational understanding of multiplication and division. To showcase our learning, second graders created beautiful M.C. Escher Tessellation art projects, photographed and analyzed "Everyday Arrays," and built Array Cities. Our next unit will focus on standard measurement, data collection, and graphing.
Opinion Writiting and Writing about Reading As we headed into late winter and early spring, our writing work has been centered on exploring opinion writing. Students debated topics orally in pairs, like "Dogs vs. Cats" and "School Lunch vs. Home Lunch". We are learning to share reasons and examples to support our opinions and now students are beginning to write about favorite books and characters. Our summative assessment of this unit will be to create a book report about a favorite book. The students have begun this work and are busy self editing using a rubric, conferring with a teacher, and publishing.

Big Idea: SYSTEMS Differentiation is key in second grade as we strive to teach the whole child, but we also encourage everyone to feel that he/she is part of our total community system. Our integrated units of study all relate to SYSTEMS to include: Magnets, Human Body Systems, Community Systems, Weather Systems and Eco-systems. Our Daily 5 approach for literacy gives students choices while they work independently to include read to self, read to someone, work on writing, word work and listen to reading. Students are then able to work in small groups or individually with the teacher for guided reading, assessment and conferencing. Our writer's workshop is inspired by Lucy Calkins. We focus on personal narratives, informational writing, opinion writing and poetry. We follow a rigorous mathematics curriculum based on EngageNY that nurtures a solid understanding of key mathematical concepts. We appreciate the support of our families as we have fun learning and growing together as 21st century citizens!
