Our Local Community, Learning and Growing Together
Late winter brings us to a time of transitions. We are looking towards warmer weather, and it seems that your children have grown so much in our time together. It is so nice to witness our relationships grow and how strong our classroom community has become as our second trimester has come to a close.
Students wrapped up their study of Community Systems by completing a non-fiction book to share the many ways in which our North American Community System has changed over time. We ended the unit by comparing and contrasting Beaufort today and in the past. We learned that farming has been important to life in Beaufort and in our State. One crop which has historical significance is indigo. Students were able to watch as we dyed white cotton fabric a beautiful indigo blue color. Then, they sewed South Carolina symbols on pieces of our hand-dyed indigo. We were able to visit the Telfair Museum in Savannah. There we visited the Owens-Thomas House and slave quarters to help us understand that life was not always fair and equal for people in our country. Students shared individual family stories with each other as we continue to build appreciation of our diversity and understanding of the strength it brings to our community.

Mathematicians at Work and Play
Our math work focused on metric measurement. Students estimated and compared items in the classroom using meters and centimeters. We have now moved into a foundational study of multiplication and division by exploring equal groups. Second graders love this concept and understand it quickly as we search for arrays in objects we see around us each day, divide objects equally among friends like cards in a game and with story problems about cookies on plates. They laugh as we explore foundational concepts like remainders and how they compare to "being fair" in their everyday lives.
Writing Like Scientists and Opinion Writing
We've published informational writing pieces like "how to" essays and lab reports. We can't wait to share our latest writing with you. The children have grown so much in their ability to edit, revise and publish work! We have just begun our third writing unit, OPINION WRITING. We prepared our opinions on graphic organizers and gave an oral presentation in a debate form. Students did a wonderful job of public speaking to present viewpoints. Now we are practicing writing about books we have read. We are digging deep to examine characters, plot, setting, genre and theme. We look forward to sharing all our writing genres, drafts, and published pieces with you this spring during our second grade Author's Tea!

Welcome to Our 2016-2017 Second Grade Community
Big Idea: SYSTEMS
We believe each student in our classroom deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged each and every day he/she comes to school.
Differentiation is key in second grade as we strive to teach the whole child, but we also encourage everyone to feel that he/she is part of our total community system. Our integrated units of study all relate to SYSTEMS to include: Magnets, Human Body Systems, Community Systems, Weather Systems and Eco-systems.
Our Daily 5 approach for literacy gives students choices while they work independently to include read to self, read to someone, work on writing, word work and listen to reading. Students are then able to work in small groups or individually with the teacher for guided reading, assessment and conferencing. Our writer's workshop is inspired by Lucy Calkins. We focus on personal narratives, informational writing, opinion writing and poetry.
