Middle School Promo Class
This year we have been working on a RCS Documentary with a special guest, Linda Dennis from Charleston. Linda runs a great organization called ABACKPACKJOURNALIST.com She taught our class many things about making a good documentary.
Linda worked with our class from the August to Nov. During her time here we gathered info and did many interviews learning about the founding of our school. Students took hours of video clips and gathered pics to tell the RCS story. Linda used the clips to create a documentary that was shown to Charter Schools across the state. We will finish our own documentary using the same interviews and photos, but we are working at the present to create new media for our Morning Show.
In mid January we took the time to study about Harriet Tubman in preparation for our MS field trip to see the movie, HARRIET. We learned about Harriet's life, movie production, the process of movie making and acting and enjoyed it all. The students loved seeing history come to life. The screenplay for Harriet was written by an amazing screenwriter, Gregory Howard who also wrote REMEMBER THE TITANS. We plan to learn more about Gregory Howard and view that movie at a later point in the year.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTS INFUSION - Shared teacher: Mrs. Sanders
Our goal this year was to provide a class that would give MS students the opportunity to learn a little about ALL the arts. We felt that if students were to be exposed to many different art experiences, their knowledge and especially their appreciation for different art mediums would increase.
This year we have studied or experienced:
Dance elements/dance experience with Mrs. Sanders.
Cooking with Chef Lisa - Fun Holiday treats
Theater - We performed a fun Holiday play for the elementary kids called THE LITTLEST CHRISTMAS TREE
Photography with guest photographer Jack Beucaire who has traveled the world.
Visual art - We learned about basic art elements and created a small art piece.
Movie creation/production/acting, and more using the movie, Harriet as our guide.
We are continuing our Art exploration as the semesters unfold....UPCOMING....More Visual Art - coming in Feb when two guest artists will join us from New Jersey. They are part of a duo called CREATIVITY CARAVAN.
1st Graders have been learning about the instruments of the Orchestra as well as the 4 main musical instrument families. They have had fun categorizing instruments into STRINGS, WOODWINDS, BRASS and PERCUSSION. In addition, they have watched videos and we have read books about different orchestras and individual instruments. Their favorite website has a game where they have to guess the musical sounds of various instruments.
THEY LOVE IT!!
Right now we are beginning our work on our yearly musical called THREE OF A KIND. Stay tuned for more details on the show which will be in a few months.
2nd graders have worked on a variety of fun activities this year in Creative Arts. They have learned a few new songs and one of their favorites is " 50 Nifty United States". (Next year in 3rd grade they will be doing more geography so we wanted to get a head start and sing and learn about our OWN nation!) Here is the video is you would like to share it at home:
We are at present working so hard on our yearly musical HATS. We have been learning songs and practicing lines in preparation for our show. We can't wait to share it with you.
This year we have been busy learning new songs and making music connections!
Students have been learning "You're A Grand 'Ol Flag" and learning about the word PATRIOTIC! We will add PATRIOTIC to our upcoming world wall. In addition, we are beginning to learn "The Fifty Nifty United States". For some they learned it in Kindergarten, for others it's a brand new song. It's fun learning about our country and singing songs to demonstrate that love.
All classes have been learning about various musical instruments and how they are categorized into MUSICAL FAMILIES. It's the perfect lesson to compliment their classroom studies on community and family connections.
The four musical families that we study are STRINGS, WOODWINDS, BRASS and PERCUSSION.
The children LOVE watching videos that correlate with our lessons. One of their favorites was watching master composer, JOHN WILLIAMS, conduct the STAR WARS THEME complete with Darth Vadar making a special appearance. SO FUN!! We have worked to learn the difference between COMPOSER and CONDUCTOR. We will continue to do so as the year progresses!
Always time for a few funny and zany songs along the way! Check out GO NOODLE for some crazy fun activities for the family!
