We enjoyed wrapping up our Personal Narrative writing unit with our first writing celebration! Students chose their favorite "small-moment" story and read it to the class. I was impressed with our students' public speaking skills as they shared their writing, and they were very respectful as they listened to their peers and gave positive feedback. See some of our pictures below!
Now we've jumped into our next unit, 'How-To' writing. Students are choosing topics and able to write about the process and illustrate detailed pictures. We are using transition words, using commas in a list, and adding 'sparkle' words to enhance our writing. Stay tuned for great 'how-to' writing pieces!
We are officially finished with our From Field to Table unit, and we had so much fun learning about plants! Students discovered the needs of plants, the importance of each part of a plant, and different stages of the life cycle of plants. We were able to apply our learning in several different amazing opportunities! We enjoyed a great field trip to Holiday Farms and their pumpkin patch. Thanks to all of your help, we planted our very own First Grade Herb Garden. Our culminating project was the Field to Table Lunch Celebration highlighting your very own family recipes in students' handwritten recipe books. Thanks to all of our family members who contributed to this lunch and joined us for our special day.
Rise Against Hunger
Our school-wide service learning project is Rise Against Hunger. Our first graders helped prepare soup by peeling potatoes for middle schoolers to cut. We joined other students, families, and community members and packaged meals to be sent around the world to feed families in need. It was a beautiful mission to be a part of. Thanks to all of you who joined us that day and modeled true cooperation, empathy, and mindfulness for our students.
