What makes the weather? February has brought us cold winter winds and the beginning of our latest integrated unit, WEATHER SYSTEMS. We've been exploring the essential question, "What makes the weather?"
Students are exploring 4 components of weather systems: atmosphere, wind, sun, and water. Using a balloon, can and straw, we created a homemade barometer to measure air pressure. Ask your child about it! We also saw air pressure in action as we filled a cup almost full of water and turned it upside down on an index card. As we took our hands away, the index card stayed in place and the water stayed in the cup! . We loved seeing wind's tendency to curve around objects as we were able to blow a candle out with a cylinder between it and our breath. But, the same candle was not extinguished when we placed a rectangular prism between it and our breath. More explorations are yet to come! Students are creating weather system flip books to record their work and write about weather measuring tools as well. Second graders have also learned numerous hands-on lessons from our awesome sixth grade buddies. Thanks a million, friends!
In Writers' Workshop, we began a new unit on OPINION WRITING. Students have been building so much stamina as readers and we all have our favorite books and characters, so they started letters to each other about their favorites. Our goal as persuasive writers is to give reasons and examples from our favorite books to support our opinions. We've wrapped up our work in addition and subtraction with REGROUPING, but we will certainly continue to practice this difficult, multi-stepped work. Students have shown such perseverance as mathematicians! We use manipulatives like the stamp game (a place value tile kit) and math drawings to help us make sense of the work of building and decomposing ones, tens and hundreds as we learn to think flexibly about numbers. We've began our work with equal groups as an introduction to multiplication and division. Valentine's Day came and everyone loved showing gratitude and love to each other with thoughtful greetings, shared snacks, and Valentines lovingly brought from home. It's such a wonder to watch your children bloom and grow as we enter the beginning of our third trimester together.
