"Fall" Into PE at Riverview

As we move into the Fall season at Riverview the Physical Education Department is just starting to pick up steam.  We have had a wonderful start to the school year.  We thoroughly enjoyed doing cooperative activities with our classes for the first couple of weeks.  Our students participated in activities such as Life Saver’s, Volcanic River, Quick Draw, Gotcha, Rock/Paper/Scissors, and the I Agree game.  All of our games are geared toward building class camaraderie, cooperation, and teamwork.  It is a great way for us as teachers, and the collective group of students to start out on the same page, build each other up, and work together to accomplish a common goal.
Once we have moved through our cooperative activities unit, we then split up according to classes with Coach VanHorn’s classes starting a soccer unit outside, and Coach Strebe’s Middle School classes beginning with an indoor volleyball unit, and his elementary classes starting with the very popular Parachute unit.
Coach VanHorn’s classes start out with skill building, and then move into lead up games, and finally they conclude with playing mini and full field soccer games.  Coach Strebe’s volleyball unit starts out with skill building activities, and then moves into a modified volleyball game as well as new-comb.  Coach Strebe’s elementary classes do fun activities with the parachute such as the mountain, the cloud, mousetrap, and shark attack.
With the aforementioned units winding down, it will be time for our students in grades 4-8 to begin their first round of Fitness Testing.  During fitness testing, our students will perform activities such as the mile run, push-ups and sit-ups, sit and reach, as well as height and weight.  After fitness testing, coach Strebe’s classes will move outside and begin a soccer unit, while Coach VanHorn’s class will move inside and begin a volleyball unit.

Coach VanHorn, and Coach Strebe would like to welcome you to the Riverview Physical Education Page.  We believe in providing a program that will educate and reach each child right where they are in terms of skill and ability.

Coach Strebe is in his 17th year of teaching physical education both in the public and private sector.  He has served the Riverview community for five years as a physical education teacher, and the last three years as Athletic Director.
Coach VanHorn has taught Physical Education for 27 years both in public school, as well as private school.  She is one of the original faculty members at Riverview, and served as the first athletic director, building the athletic program from the ground up.
