Coach VanHorn and Coach Strebe are so excited that the new school year is upon us. Things are going so well right now in the Physical Education Department, and seem to be working so smoothly to start the new academic calendar. Just as in years past, Coach VanHorn teaches PE classes for grades 3-5, and grades 6-8. Coach Strebe teaches classes for grades K-2, as well as grades 6-8.
We both started the new year working together with each other's classes as our students participated in cooperative lessons, designed to build confidence, collaboration, problem solving, as well as use all seven of the core values that Riverview emphasizes on a daily basis. Students participated in activities such as "Volcanic River", "Titanic", "I agree, and the “noodle game, as well as many other cooperative activities.
After three weeks of cooperative activities, we both dove into our pre-assessment of the Fitness Gram test. The Fitness Gram test is a process that we administer twice a year; once in the fall, and once in the spring as a post assessment piece. The Fitness Gram includes disciplines such as push-ups, sit-ups, shoulder and trunk flexibility, height, weight, and everyone’s favorite…the mile run!!
We test each student in grades 4-8 in all of the aforementioned categories and record the data. The program then puts together an analysis form for each child and signifies whether they fall within the health fitness zone of life. This information is then used set personal fitness goals, and to determine better ways in which we can help our students achieve those goals.
Once testing is completed, Coach VanHorn and Coach Strebe will move toward our separate units. Coach Strebe will begin taking his classes outside while doing a soccer unit. Coach VanHorn will keep her classes in the gym and begin a volleyball unit. Again, Coach VanHorn and Coach Strebe want to welcome you all to the new year. We are excited to be hear and to have the honor and privilege to teach your children! Please feel free to visit us in the gym any time!
