One of Riverview's missions is to create a hands-on learning environment. Our 7th graders worked in cooperative teams to complete a scavenger hunt through the Charleston Aquarium. This hunt was designed to show the habitats of South Carolina from the mountains to the sea.
7th Grade English Language Arts
What is more important…..individuality or social acceptance?
Why might people hide their true identities?
Our 7th graders are beginning the year with a novel study of, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. Throughout our study, we focus on the plot structure of a novel, as well as how authors develop characters through internal and external dialogue and their interactions within their social structure. Students are exploring these elements through constructive responses, small group activities, and Socratic Seminars. Informational text is paired with our novel to study why gangs and cliques form. Further, we are exploring the interdependence of a gang's social structure.
To bring closure to our Read-a-thon, our 7th graders had a "Readover", an entire day dedicated to pleasure reading! Thank you to our Mystery Readers for sharing your love of reading and favorite books with our students!
7th Grade World Cultures
Why do structures and systems move between independence and interdependence? Seventh grade historians started their year by connecting this essential question to world history and their interdependence with it by creating personal timelines of events of their lives along with world events during their lifetimes. They have also gained an understanding of the Global Age and the role it played in changing world economies through interdependent trade. In order to gain a deeper understanding of this trade and its impact on capitalism, students have had fun choosing stocks to "buy." Each student was "given" $1,000 to trade, and they will be following the growth of their stocks throughout the year.
7th Grade Science
Essential Question: Why do structures and systems move between independence and interdependence?
Our 7th graders began this school year exploring different types of matter. We investigated how substances can be classified as elements, compounds, or mixtures and students developed their own flowchart to help them classify any type of matter.
We then began learning about the atomic structure of different elements and students constructed a 3-D model of an atom of their choice. Our journey through chemistry has taken us on an exploration of the periodic table of the elements and the similarities between certain families of elements. Through these investigations, we have been pondering why some elements remain independent while others create chemical bonds with other elements.
Mrs. Kolb's Math Classes
We worked hard this past month on ratios and proportions and completed chapter 1 successfully. Our unit focused on finding how one relates to the whole and if we can find how much 1 unit is worth, we can find how much x units are worth and vice versa. We broke down our key word UNIT RATE and realized that like in words unicorn, unicycle and unique, UNI means one. Fourth period took their learning of proportions and applied it to a project called Mini-Me where they measured their height, foot length, hand length, and arm length and then created a paper version of their scaled down selves. Check out the mini-mes in 4th period. The essential question for this chapter is: How can you show that 2 objects are proportional? Students learned how to answer that question using a graph, chart and word problem.
