Our monthly websites allow us the opportunity to show you a little of what we have been working on thus far. Power School is a great tool we encourage you to use to remain up to date regarding your child's grades. Also, we send out weekly newsletters every weekend which will help keep you up to date on weekly quizzes, tests, projects, assignments and in general "the happenings" in the middle school.

7th Grade Social Studies
Students had fun competing in an "Escape Room Challenge" for World War II. They used critical thinking skills to decode messages and solve a mystery about Anne Frank's diary, and in the process deepened their understanding of the war and the Holocaust...synergy in action!
7th Grade English Language Arts

Why might people hide their true identities?
Our 7th graders are beginning the year with a novel study of, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. Throughout our study, we focus on the plot structure of a novel, as well as how authors develop characters through internal and external dialogue and their interactions within their social structure. Students are exploring these elements through constructive responses, small group activities, and Socratic Seminars. Informational text is paired with our novel to study why gangs and cliques form. Furthermore, we are exploring the interdependence of a gang's social structure.
7th Grade Science
This month, we have been learning about DNA, genes, and chromosomes and how they work in SYNERGY to create the characteristics of all living things. Students explored the rules of inheritance with several simulations that helped them see how genes are passed down and expressed from parents to offspring. We completed a creative project called "Creature Feature" that challenged students to invent an imaginary creature, give it unique traits, and predict the probability of those traits being passed down to their offspring.
In addition, students investigated how DNA technology is being used to alter the genome of organisms. We learned about the benefits and dangers of various technology including: cloning, genetic engineering, and gene therapy. Through discussion and debate, students were able to develop an informed opinion about whether these tools could benefit humanity and the environment in the future.
Finally, students conducted a long term experiment growing corn seeds. We were investigating if the environment can have an influence on how genes are expressed. We grew corn plants in 2 different environments, light and dark. Some of our corn expressed a recessive mutation for albinism that they inherited from their parents. Students observed that the environment did not effect the gene for albinism, but did impact our non-albino plant's ability to produce chlorophyll which resulted in yellow leaves. This in depth experiment gave students valuable experience in the scientific method, data collection, and scientific writing as well as enhance their fundamental knowledge of genetics.
Algebra - Mrs. Cooler
In Algebra, students have been putting forth maximum effort to finish up the material needed to cover all the state standards they will be tested on for their South Carolina End of Course exam. One of the main topics we covered in the past two units was factoring trinomials and using quadratic equations to find the maximums and minimums of parabolas. Pre-Algebra - Mrs. Cooler
Pre-Algebra students have made such great progress in the past month. We had a great time exploring Geometric figures by constructing 3-dimensional shapes from nets (see pictures below) and then learned how to calculate the volume and surface area of those shapes.
Since finishing our unit on Geometry, students have started learning about Probability. We recently learned the difference between Theoretical and Experimental Probability and we even simulated an experiment with a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors as you can see in the video below.
Math - Mrs. Kolb
First period is picture below receiving a visit from a Battery Creek senior Teacher Cadet and her teacher. They were working on a scale project for a playground. Second period is working on solving 2-step equations with manipulatives.
