7th Grade Social Studies
Seventh grade historians started their year by analyzing our big idea, SYNERGY, by participating in team-building activities. Students had fun building their map skills as they worked in synergy on geography scavenger hunts. They also gained an understanding of the Global Age and the role it played in bringing synergy to changing world economies through trade. In order to gain a deeper understanding of this trade and its impact on capitalism, students have had fun playing a trade game, in which their teams used synergy to try to build wealth. They also had fun choosing stocks to "buy." Each student was "given" $1,000 to trade, and they will be following the growth of their stocks throughout the year.
This trimester seventh grade historians have also used cause and effect relationships to analyze the synergy in the world, which resulted from the ideas and inspiration of the Enlightenment Philosophers. Students have discovered how the Enlightenment inspired "the people" to fight for the limiting of government powers and
for the rights of all citizens in the English Civil War and Glorious Revolution, the American Revolution, and the French Revolution. They have had fun sharing their expertise and deepening their understanding by creating comic strips of events of the English Civil War and participating in a simulation of the French Revolution.
7th Grade English Language Arts
First trimester, students completed a novel study of Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. To simulate the setting of our novel, we transformed our classroom into a post-Revolutionary coffeehouse! With hot chocolate in hand, we read the first chapter with the clip-clop of passing horse carriages in the background.
