This month we welcomed students back to a new year and we hit the ground running in technology class!
Kindergarten students are learning how to resize objects such as images using the programs PhotoBooth, Pages, and the website StoryJumper. This activity helps students improve fine motor skills as well as practicing the sometimes difficult skill of "clicking and dragging" .
We used PhotoBooth to take three pictures and then imported them into Pages. Students had to resize the images and drag them to the correct spot on the page.
Students in first grade are practicing writing sentences and drawing a picture to match what they wrote. This is a skill that is practiced daily using their classroom writing journal, but typing a sentence on the computer can be a challenge so we practice, practice, practice!
Second grade has been studying community systems. We used Google Earth for several classes to examine our local community. Google Earth allowed students to zoom in on street level to explore downtown Beaufort, suburban areas such as Lady's Island, and rural areas such as St. Helena. Students also enjoyed locating their homes and viewing how far away they lived from Riverview. We compared and contrasted the different communities students lived in.
This month, third grade took a little break from integration studies in technology class to focus on refining our word processing skills. Students were given a "word processing test" which outlined key skills third graders should master by the end of the year. This was used as a pre-assessment to determine students' strengths and weaknesses. For this assignment students were able to work together with very little direct instruction from me. Since students have strengths in different areas, they are the best teachers sometimes! Some skills such as changing font, size, and color were easy. Other skills such as cutting, pasting, and changing the text alignment took some practice. We will revisit this assessment in the coming months as we continue to practice weekly.
Students have continued to master the iPads and the device is now an integral part of their school day. During our weekly technology specials we are focusing on digital citizenship lessons. This month we have examined how we use technology in our life and students created a short iMovie using a metaphor to describe their digital life. We have also have practiced refining our Google Search skills and how to make our searches more efficient. Upcoming lessons will focus on cyber bullying and how to be safe online.
Parents of 6th grade students can always check on student progress using Edmodo. All assignments and grades are recorded in the Progress section and students can check this at any time. If you need any assistance locating their progress or need a Parent Access code please email me.
